The most widely used of all potting composts - ideal for bedding plants and raising young potted plants. Holds water and nutrients well. Does not contain soil or loam but consists of peat or peat substitutes mixed with sand, perlite, bark chip or vermiculite for added drainage. Ruxley's ownbranded compost is multi-purpose.
Tends to be a peat-based mix with less added lime and different fertilisers to multi-purpose compost - acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons, azaleas, heathers and camellias need Ericaceous compost.
John Innes is an excellent loam-based compost - it is the most easily managed medium for permanently containerised trees, shrubs and perennials. Made from sterilised loam, peat and grit with added lime and fertilisers there are three standardised recipes:
John Innes No.1 (low in nutrients) - ideal for shortterm pot plants
John Innes No. 2 (more nutrients) - for permanent pot plants and low fertiliser needs
John Innes No. 3 (most nutrients) - for a wide range of permanent container plants
In accordance with our Peat Policy we are commmitted to offering peat-reduced or peat-free alternative potting composts. These contain organic materials such as composted bark, woodfibre, coir and green compost. Supplementary fertilisers may be required to increase nutrient levels.
We stock a wide selection of decorative mulches including wood and bark chippings. Use these to suppress weeds and enhance the appearance of garden borders and paths - or for children's play areas.
