Ruxley in Bloom

Ruxley in Bloom 2024 Annual Gardening Competition

Welcome to Ruxley in Bloom, our annual gardening competition. Ruxley in Bloom is as much about people and the community, as it is about plants and gardening. Founded on the principle that brightening up our outdoor spaces is good for us all, the competition gives individuals and local communities an opportunity to work together to bring about change.

This year’s competition gives everyone a chance to get out there and whether you are a budding gardener or just starting out in your garden, this competition offers everything you could want from a gardening contest – free entry, professional independent judges and an abundance of prizes. With a range of categories to choose from there’s plenty for hardy allotmenteers aiming to be the ‘pick of the crop’ to schools striving to be ‘top of the class’!

A Little About Ruxley in Bloom 2024...

We can all agree that many of us have invested plenty of time into our gardens over the past few years and they’re all as beautiful as ever. At Ruxley Manor we’re proud to host Ruxley in Bloom and get the opportunity to view the many beautiful gardens, allotments and containers in the area that enter!

This year’s competition opens once again and gives those in the area the chance to get back out in the garden or to make an even bigger display in their outdoor space. Whether you’re a budding or hardy gardener, Ruxley in Bloom is for anyone and everyone.

With a range of categories to choose from this year – and many new ones! There is a category to suit everybody, and we encourage everyone to give our gardening competition a go.

For our local schools, we have the Planted Container category and the Best School Allotment categories whose aim is to encourage schools and their pupils to dig deep and transform an allotment.

We hope to see many faces this year, old and new as we head into another wonderful gardening season! And back again for another year to head up our judging panel is Jim Buttress, former Royal Gardener and Horticultural Judge on the BBC TV’s The Big Allotment Challenge.

A special award for an individual who Ruxley Manor feel has a genuine commitment to gardening that deserves to be recognised. You may know someone who has overcome personal adversity tocreate a garden or perhaps you would like to nominate a neighbour who helps to maintain your own garden. Either way, this person will be that ‘special someone’ whose love of gardening shines through.

To nominate, please email inbloom@ruxley-manor.co.uk with the nominees contact details and an explanation as to why they deserve to win.

How to Enter

Please note – If you wish to enter our competition offline, please visit us instore to pickup an entry form. We are unable to send entry forms in the post.

Residential

To enter, you merely need to live within 15 miles of Ruxley Manor. You can choose to enter one or more categories and even nominate a neighbour or relative if you feel that their green-fingered talent deserves to be recognised!

Best front garden

seasonal or permanent display
Awarded to the front garden which the judges feel is the most attractive or which best demonstrates horticultural skill and/or design flair. Can be solely containers, a cultivated garden or a combination of both. Colour themes and contrasting colours tend to attract additional marks from the judges, as will any garden that leaves a lasting impression.

Best back garden

Awarded to the back garden which the judges consider to be a ‘hidden gem’. It could showcase a variety of plants, act as a haven for wildlife, or simply represent the most enterprising use of a small space – serene, surprising or superb (or perhaps all three!). Remember to keep an eye out for weeds and pests before the judge’s spot any!

Schools

Will you be top of the class?! Enter into the competition and see if you can impress our judges!

Best school themed container
As many schools and business are focusing more on sustainability we are asking schools to create the best single container display that is colourful, creative and fun while promoting a sustainable message! The use of recycled containers is encouraged – provided there is adequate scope for drainage, ideas include old food containers or up-cycling old or unused items!

Best school allotment plot

New for 2024 and tied in with our sustainable theme, we are looking for the most productive and well-tended allotment plot owned and cared for by students in schools. Crops must be pest and disease free, paths should be well maintained with tidy edges, and there should be evidence of good compost production and cultivation of soil.

Allotments

Best allotment plot (full size)

Awarded to the most productive and well-tended full size allotment plot. Crops must be pest and disease free, paths should be well maintained with tidy edges, and there should be evidence of good compost production and cultivation of soil.

Best allotment plot (half size)

Awarded to the most productive and well-tended half size allotment plot. Crops must be pest and disease free, paths should be well maintained with tidy edges, and there should be evidence of good compost production and cultivation of soil.

Best Newcomer

Awarded to the most productive and well-tended new allotment plot, taken over in the last three years. Crops must be pest and disease free, paths should be well maintained with tidy edges, and there should be evidence of good compost production and cultivation of soil.

Best overall allotment site

Awarded to the site that the judges feel is the most well maintained and which best demonstrates a sense of community and shared enthusiasm for allotment life.

Business & Communities

This is the broadest category and is designed to appeal to businesses and community groups in your locality.

Best shop/business/pub/restaurant – garden/container(s) display
Awarded to the organisation that the judges feel has best embraced the gardening competition by helping to brighten up the locality. The display can include, among others, police, ambulance and fire stations, hotels, hospitals, care homes, golf courses, offices, retail outlets and so on.

Best community garden
Awarded to the garden that the judges feel best represents what can be achieved when like-minded individuals (two or more), work together to create something special for everyone to enjoy.

When you’re ready to sign up, simply complete the entry form by clicking on the “Enter Competition” button on this page. Once you have submitted your entry you will receive an acknowledgement notice via email. Where appointments are not required (for front garden and business entries), you will receive a postcard through your letterbox stating that judging has taken place.

We introduced judging of photos during covid, however now that things are back to normal, we are no longer offering this option and all entries will be visited by one of our judges in person.

We have appointed independent, professional horticultural judges and everyone will receive an appropriate certificate (gold, silver gilt, silver, bronze and merit). Certificates and prizes will be awarded at a special Awards Ceremony on 12th September 2024 at 7pm at Ruxley Manor.

PLEASE NOTE, THE JUDGES’ DECISION IS FINAL.
