10 Quick & Easy Ways to Update your Garden

Posted by admin on September 9, 2016

With the autumn months quickly drawing in, you may feel like your garden is stuck in the summer, looking a bit sorry for itself. We’ve put together our favourite quick and easy ways to update your garden and bring it back to life again, ready for the darker, colder nights ahead.

1. Prune
It’s easy to forget about trees and shrubs in your garden, but you’ll be amazed by how much of a difference they can make once they’ve been given a tidy up. This is a very inexpensive tip that can make subtle changes to your garden in a big way.

2. New furniture
New furniture can instantly bring any garden to life and autumn is a great time to get some in. If you’re someone who enjoys your garden all year round, it would be a great idea to get some furniture that works in all seasons. Here at Ruxley, we have a great range of outdoor furniture, perfect for all seasons.

3. Fake It
An obvious sign that your garden is lacking some well needed TLC is grass that looks a little sad, slightly brown and is on its way out. You could replace your lawn with artificial turf, helping your garden to look great all year round in a fairly inexpensive way.

4. Patios
Perhaps your garden doesn’t feature any lawn, but does have some great patio areas that need some attention. Firstly give the whole area a hose down, then using a stiff brush, thoroughly scrub the area using a patio cleaning solution. Leave this for around ten minutes, then rinse the surface once more with a hose. Your patios will be sparkling and will instantly give your garden a lift!

5. Lighting
As the darker nights draw in, we often forget this can make our gardens look dull and unappealing. Great lighting can help to instantly transform your garden. In the colder months you could opt for a combination of outdoor heaters and warm lights, to keep your garden as a great, cosy place to relax throughout the year.

6. Try screening
If you find that there is an area of your garden that you’re unable to renovate no matter what you do, you could try screening. This is a quick and easy way to keep messy areas out of view. You could try using willow for a rustic feel or bamboo for a more modern look.

7. Embrace what you have
Take a look at what you already have lying about your garden, whether this is an old wheelbarrow you no longer use or a rusty, old watering can. Rather than giving them the boot, you could use these pieces throughout your garden in different, alternative ways, such as unique plant pots. Your garden will look unique and updated in no time.

8. Net ponds
If you have a pond in your garden, it’s important that before autumn comes around you spread a fine meshed net across the pond. This net is ideal for catching any leaves that could potentially make your pond water filthy and block any filters on pumps. A quick and easy tip to stop your garden becoming unsightly as the months go by.

9. Remove old, tired plants
If your existing plants are looking a bit old and sorry for themselves, it’s time for them to go. Digging up and removing any plants that are bringing your garden down will instantly transform the way your garden looks. You can always replace them with new, great plants.

10. Seasonal flowers & veg
Not all plants live through the year, especially in colder months. However, there are some fantastic plants that can look great all year round, particularly in winter. If you have a vegetable patch in your garden, there are also some veg that can grow continuously in the winter months. This way, you’ll get the best out of the winter months!
