Natures Time for Planting

Plant autumn and winter colour this month for the best results – the soil is still warm and there should be enough rain to get everything bedded in, leaving it until later can mean that the plants don’t make the size they could before plant growth slows down. Hanging baskets and planted containers are the perfect(and easy) way to add colour to your patios and displays throughout the winter – with very little maintenance necessary!

Top Tips!

Buy a planted container – For minimal effort and maximum impact, you can buy a ready planted container, packed with plants to give you perfect autumn colour.

Help wildlife – remove leaves from paths or lawns and transfer them to a corner or beneath a hedge, where hedgehogs and other animals can crawl for shelter.

Give your bulbs a boost – if you would like to give your autumn bulbs a boost you can add a high potassium fertiliser like the Westland Fish Blood & Bone every ten days or so once sprouts begin to appear.

Autumn Planting Guide
  • Plant out Narcissus and Tulip bulbs for flowering next season.
  • Plant Wallflowers, Polyanthus, Pansy, Viola  and other autumn bedding.
  • Fill gaps in your borders with evergreens like Skimmia.
  • Start sowing Sweet Peas in October.
  • Plant trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants in September.
How to Plant Bulbs
  • Check your bulbs – Before planting thoroughly check your bulbs and discard any that show signs of rot or softness
  • Site your bulbs  – Check your bulbs planting instructions to find the best site in your garden or for your container.
  • Prep your soil – If you need to add compost to your beds now is the time. Turn over the soil to loosen and add the required compost to enrich. Dig the holes for your bulbs based on the planting instructions.
  • Plant your bulbs – It is generally the pointy end of the bulb that needs to be on top – if you have a slightly wonky bulb and cannot tell which end is up, plant your autumn bulb horizontally. Bulbs shoots will naturally grow in the opposite direction to gravity
What We Love…

Chrysanthemums – Fantastic domes of long-lasting late summer and autumn colour for pots and borders. Hardy Garden Mums are vey easy to grow, attract butterflies and bees and give easy colour in deep, rich autumn shades.

Chrysanthemums will undoubtedly add that touch of colour to your garden as your summer blooming plants begin to die off for the winter season. They’re perfect for beds or pots to add a statement to your autumn garden as their long lasting nature will keep the bursts of colour throughout autumn

Lawn Care

As the sun begins to cool, you can help your lawn recover from the wear and tear of the scorching summer sun with our lawn care products!

Nobody wants to have brown and yellow grass throughout the year, and that’s why our experts in store are here to give you advice on the best way to help restore your lawn to its former glory.

  • Scarify – begin by raking your lawn to reduce the layers of thatch (dead grass) as this can prevent water and fertiliser getting through to the soil and roots
  • Trim – Trim your lawns edges along beds and patios, this helps to make you lawn appear more tidy and stops your lawn from overgrowing into these areas
  • Flatten – Flattening ensures that your lawn is even, meaning that there will be no dry spots or flooding on your lawn for an even finish
  • Aerate – Aeration allows your lawn to breathe and accept more nutrients and water into the soil to promote a healthier growth. It will help your lawn survive extreme conditions such as waterlogging or drought.
  • Top Dressing – Apply a top dressing to improve the soils structure and encourages the root development for a healthy lawn.
  • Weed & Feed – It’s important to add some lawn feed to your lawn to help the roots grow strong throughout the winter – and with added weed killer, your lawn will remain weed free through the winter.
